Holding What Matters

This project begins with a tension between institutional elderly care and forms of care embedded within British–Pakistani Muslim life, where duty, memory, faith and intimacy are carried through ritual. Rather than translating religion as image or symbol, the work teases out the spatial conditions ritual makes possible: orientation, protection, reflection and belonging.

Architectural instruments test these conditions. Frames, cabinets and supports explore how memory can be aligned, concealed, disclosed and held, producing thresholds between object and observer, body and surface, privacy and encounter.

These ideas move into architecture through drawings and fragments that resist the generic room. Opacity, aperture, overlapping edges and viewpoints allow spaces to hover between exposure and retreat. Care is not placed inside the architecture afterwards; it is drawn out through the precision of how bodies, materials and viewpoints meet.

The project searches for thresholds of transcendence in later life: moments of feeling held, recognised or connected beyond routine. Through small architectural acts, memory, dignity and inner life become part of the architecture from the beginning.

Active Grounds
Handheld scanning turns prayer mat into a trace of home, faith and touch. Its ruptures and distortions record the body’s imperfect presence, revealing belonging as a portable threshold, continually remade through ritual.

Body And Page
Merging timber and 3D-printed infills into dialogue, holding ancestral craft and technological possibility together. Their meeting forms a threshold where embodied memory and emerging material intelligence reshape care.

Framing Thresholds
The Fabrication of the instrument was as a design lubricant between speculation and fabrication. Each informed the other, revealing spatial logics of privacy, sharing, perception and care through making

1:50 Fragment Model
The synthesis of the project investigated how particular geometry could produce consequences: how it might position a body, imply a threshold, invite an object, or suggest where care could take place.

Forms Of Islamic Remembrance
A supporting investigation explores the physical act of remembrance through the relationship between the body and a carefully shaped object. Its form guides posture and hand movement, creating a place for sustained attention and repeated gesture.
