Orchestrating a Compassionate Travel

This project focuses on how architecture can compassionately respond to the physical presence of people in space through an acoustic accompaniment. I have been studying metal fabrication methods by designing and making steel instruments. This has helped me uncover the possibilities and nuance in acoustic responses that can be achieved with metal. The instruments construct an acoustic orchestration for Brussel’s existing metro life, by playing the life in Beekkant Station. The architecture is designed to conduct the active vibrations which perform in space for lonely commuters, creating a score for station life.
Hugging Device

Interactive wearable that explores the acoustic potential of a hug.
Station Orchestration

Instruments held within the station at ticket hall level and platform level.
Staircase Instrument and Architecture

Playing the modelled structures.
Performance with the Instruments

A performance within the platform accompanied by a subwoofer to activate train vibrations.
Mirroring Acoustic Representation

Proposed sound from the ticket barriers drawn with light in plan to illustrate the acoustic behaviours reflected off the accompanying structures.
