The World Shall Come To Me

This project explores the human listening experience in Hastings, using self-made tools to study site acoustics. It focuses on sound in three spaces: emission, reception, and the threshold space between. The project raises several research questions about the potential, existence, manipulation, and impacts of non-linear sonic and visual thresholds, their social significance, and the role of transformative technology in connecting distant spaces and altering the receiver’s experience and understanding of their surroundings.

Acoustic Mapping And Threshold Design

A mapping of the site acoustics documents the listening experiences of spaces of shadowing and amplification. Acoustic threshold design manipulates the path of sounds from The Sea, Town and Boat Yard.

The Sonic Threshold

The Sonic Threshold Device captures sound at pinpointed distances. Testing of the apparatus revealed breaking of societal understanding of sound and privacy. Social ramifications are associated with acoustic voyeurism and hearing what is unexpected.

Visual Context Reconstruction

Apparatus is designed as a means of reconstructing the visual context in Hastings. Modifiable boundaries and objects for selection, in relation to perspective and parallax are used as a tool for designing a more fruitful context.

Architecture In Context Apparatus

The model acts as a tool for designing threshold architecture in relation to visual context. Abstract pieces make visual connections, which are later translated to architecture through plan, section and elevation.

Plans, Sections, and Elevations

Several plans, sections and elevations are worked back and forth with previous apparatus to design visual architecture, relating to the context. Translucent tape and paper types form iterative layers, with boundary reconstruction through collaging.
